While The Kissing Booth isn’t a bad movie, it’s just too much of a mess. The cast and soundtrack are upbeat and entertaining, but there are gaps in the story and a predictable ending.

In the end, this isn’t a classic rom-com, and it’s more like a distant cousin of Mean Girls. As such, the movie lacks the edgy content that teen romance fans are used to.

Moxie

Moxie is a Netflix original film that is based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. This teen love story is about a 16-year-old girl named Vivian. She is a cis-white teen who is dating a boy.

When Vivian accidentally starts a feminist movement at her school, she is put in a precarious position. She finds herself having to make choices between standing up and standing down. But she decides to take action and creates a zine. It is a small thing, but it helps bring to light the sexism in her school.

While a good movie, Moxie is not perfect. There are several minor plot road bumps that keep it from being a pure masterpiece. Nonetheless, the film still has its moments.

One of the best parts of the movie is the chemistry between Hadley Robinson and Amy Poehler. In particular, the mother-daughter relationship is built on chemistry.

The other aspect of the film that has been talked about a lot is the idea of intersectional feminism. As you might expect, Moxie addresses this subject head on, naming distinct issues that pertain to girls of color, trans girls, and women athletes.

Zoey Deutch in Confessions of an Invisible Girl

It’s a comedy-drama road-trip film, which attempts to balance a couple of nebulous themes: local color and money-balled treatise on debt collection.

The film’s best features come from its ensemble cast, which includes names that a discerning film buff would be familiar with. Besides Deutch, the rest of the cast includes Jon Hamm, Michael Winterbottom, Ed Helms and Rebecca Hall. There’s even a cameo by a relative newcomer, Barkhad Abdi. While most of the film’s slapstick moments fall flat, there are some genuine laughs to be had, especially in the finale.

In the movie, Deutch does a remarkable job of bringing a degree of genuine emotion to her performance. Moreover, her character is more than just a flimsy foil.
